Good question.

In the late 80's the CIA ran a super-secret underground lab in New Mexico that was trying to breed mutant killer smart dogs for use as assassins.

One day the gene splicer hickuped and two of the puppies got smarter but not killer. This result was hidden from management and the pair sent out for disposal.

Well, needless to say, wd and reboot got away. They then spent a bad few months on the streets trying to panhandle. The going was rough as they couldn't speak (the CIA hadn't wanted any backtalk, or sercurity leaks). But they did pick up reading and such very quickly. So they finally ended up as programmers because "On the Internet, no one knows you're a dog."

And anyway, if you can hack unix network code, you can get a job no matter how much hair you have.

So now they work in the basement of a software company in Palo Alto. And they even attend company events as mascots, just like the other hackers do.

Thus, in answer to your question, wd and reboot are purebred after the fact -- or pure spliced, or whatever you want to call it. As for original genes before CIA intervention, definitely mutt. The CIA wanted dog agents that would draw no attention as they skulked about on their deadly missions.

JG, tnx for asking
